YORK PROBUS CLUB
for retired men who enjoy fellowship, stimulating talks and social outings

WHO WE ARE
New Members Welcome
Probus is an association of retired and semi-retired people who join together in autonomous clubs throughout the UK and the world. Probus is a combination of the first syllables of the words professional and business, but membership is also open to executives in all fields of work who have had some measure of management responsibility.
Probus started in the UK in 1965, and its aim is to provide regular gatherings for those who, in retirement, appreciate opportunities to meet others in similar circumstances and of a similar type of interest. Most meetings consist of a talk from a local speaker (contributions from members are welcome), and this is preceded by coffee or tea and biscuits.
The size of a club is limited and the emphasis is for Probus clubs to be:
-
Simple in structure
-
Free from the constraints and obligations of service clubs
-
Low in cost
-
Aimed primarily at providing fellowship, and the opportunity to develop acquaintance
-
Made up of members who are compatible with one another
The Probus Club of York was the first to be formed in York, in 1970, and it meets once a fortnight on Thursday mornings from September to the end of May.
From time to time, outings may be arranged on which members may bring partners or guests if they wish. There is also a festive lunch for members and partners early in January, and a members’ lunch is held occasionally on meeting days.
Currently the annual membership fee is around £45 to cover expenses, which includes room hire and the cost of coffee and biscuits at each meeting. There is wheelchair access to the meeting room.
New members are usually proposed by existing members, but former business or professional people who are interested joining the club, should contact us through the contacts form.
